Let's put 2020 behind us and take a peek to the top 5 travel trends emerging for 2021 and 2022.
Travel Bubbles
As social distancing, social bubbles, and circles have become part of our everyday language, it is natural that it has also become a driving the new trends for 2021 and 2022. It's about travelling with the people you know!! This is the perfect time to travel with grandparents, parents and kids. Small groups of 6 to 12 of your friends - a girls' getaway, a beer or whisk(e)y trip with your buddies, or just travelling with a few other couples. Tour companies are really adjusting their itineraries to offer many small group trips; there are more large vans and smaller buses being offered to accommodate your smaller group.
Personalized Travel
Because groups will be smaller, travel plans can be personalized just for your bubble. Travellers want that specialized custom trip. Do you want to see some highlights, but also experience a local cooking class - custom trips can do that. Because you are not part of a large group, you get to pick your own activities and design an itinerary exactly how you want it.
Country Intensive Travel
Instead of trying to fit as many locations and countries as possible, intensive in-country travel is key. Stay either in one or two spots and fully immerse yourself in the local experience.
Visit museums, galleries, and churches, but also take a cooking class from a local chef or go on a micro-brewery tour of the area. If sweets are your weakness, maybe take a pastry class, or just take a pastry tour. Spend time in restaurants and cafes and meet the locals and get their view of the areas. Locals are happy to show your their location's pride and joy. You never know what they will suggest.
Expedition and Adventure Travel
Travel is going outdoors. As we have all been hearing, gathering outdoors is better, and people are looking into keeping that experience for their travel. The demand for expedition and adventure travel has seen a boost. While adventure travel involves active sports like rock climbing, whitewater rafting, snowmobiling, or surfing, expedition travel is the softer version of adventure travel. Expedition activities may include hiking, snorkeling, or kayaking, but also exploration of the local culture, cuisine, landscape, and people.
The Not Top 10 Destinations
As most people are trying to avoid large crowds, travellers are looking for not-so-touristy destinations. In recent years, Antarctica, Galapagos, and Iceland have been emerging as great expedition travel locations. Countries like Norway, Denmark, and Slovenia are also picking up some steam for those that have already travelled to the popular European countries like Italy, France, and Germany. But those that still want to experience some of these popular countries are opting for small locations that allow immersive experiences like San San Gimignano, Italy or Mijas, Spain, or Sylt, Germany.
Travel will definitely come back, but how we do it will be different. And different is not a bad thing. It will give us all a chance to experience locations we would never have thought it, and we will be more conscious of how our travel impacts the world.
The future looks good, and travel is going to be fabulous when it's back.
