As you probably have noticed throughout these blogs is that I LOVE food. I love trying out new foods. I love visiting the local eateries. As I write this, it is the beginning of 2021, and everyone puts diets on there all the time, but we all have to eat. And if you are going to eat, eat well. Europeans have fabulous food, and it's usually all homemade. Farm to table!! The fresher, the better. How can that be bad for your health?


One of the countries that have some fabulous food is Greece. If you lucky enough to currently live near a Greek community, you may have already experienced some of these foods, but imagine how delicious it will be when you visit the country.

You can expect fresh ingredients and loads of flavors whenever you indulge in some of the Greek foods found throughout the country. Their healthy traditional recipes will leave you wanting more, and fortunately, there are a ton of excellent restaurants, eateries, and cafes all over. So, to help you figure out what Greek dish you're going to order next, here are 12 of the best Greek foods experience you need to try out.


Meze

Greek meze is a blend of bite-sized foods. This platter may include anything from roasted red peppers to octopus, depending on where you order it. They may come served hot or cold, and they make perfect appetizers.


Magirefta

Magirefta refers to any slow-cooked, homemade meal made in Greece. Traditionally any Magirefta meal is cooked in a katsarola (deep pot) or tapsi (deep baking tray).


Local Farmer's Market

For fresh ingredients and bites to eat, visit one of the many local farmer's markets. Visiting the laiki (farmer's market) is perhaps one of the tastiest and most incredible experiences you'll have in Greece.



Souvlaki

Souvlaki refers to Greek fast food, but don't let that turn you away. Greek fast-food is typically much healthier and tasty than fast-food in Canada and US. You can order gyros, meat and vegetable skewers, grilled turkey patties, seasoned rice, and much more.


Greek Taverna

You can find many family-run Greek tavernas throughout Athens that serve fabulous food. At the tavernas, you can enjoy a little music, socializing, and dancing while being served some of the tastiest traditional meals.


Spirits

Greece has traditional spirits that the natives like to drink, including ouzo, masticha, and raki, among other types of unique liquors.






Greek Deli

You absolutely must visit a Greek deli. Greek delis have a wide range of meats and cheeses that you can't find very quickly in Canada. A Greek delicatessen will awaken all of your senses.


Greek Wines

As one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, you absolutely cannot pass up on the opportunity to indulge in Greek wine. Visit a wine bar or an international market to find some of the best wines around.


Coffee

Coffee is huge in Greece. Traditional Greek coffee is quite strong, and you'll have a ton of delicious options.






Greek Desserts

You can't leave Greece without trying some of its desserts, especially its zaharoplasteio (pastries). Some of the sweets you should try include kataifi, milopita, galaktoboureko, and loukoumades.


Greek Street Food

Greece has some incredible street food. From gyros to koulourakia, you will find an excellent selection of tasty Greek meals.


Moussaka

As one of Greece's most treasured authentic dishes, you must try moussaka. This dish includes slow-cooked meats, eggplant, and cheeses, which are served as a casserole.
