For most travellers, I recommend spending two or three nights in Athens before heading to the islands.While the Acropolis is undoubtedly one of the world's great historical sites, Athens is less about postcard views and more about experiencing modern Greek life. The city is known for its incredible food scene, lively neighbourhoods, rooftop restaurants, and fascinating history.The Greek Islands, however, are where many travellers choose to slow down. Together, Athens and the islands create a wonderful balance of history, culture, relaxation, and spectacular scenery.

There isn't one "best" Greek island because each offers a completely different experience.Some islands are known for beautiful beaches, while others are better suited to history, hiking, dramatic scenery, nightlife, quiet villages, or simply disconnecting from everyday life. Others combine several of those experiences into one destination.Rather than choosing islands because they're the most photographed, I recommend choosing islands that match how you like to travel. That's often what makes the difference between a good vacation and an unforgettable one.

Both are excellent options.A cruise allows you to experience several islands without worrying about ferries, accommodations, or transportation, making it a wonderful introduction to Greece. Travelling independently gives you more time to settle into each destination and experience island life at a slower pace.For many travellers, combining several nights on land with a Greek Islands cruise creates the best of both worlds.

Less is usually more.It's tempting to visit as many islands as possible, but every ferry or flight takes time away from enjoying Greece itself. I generally recommend choosing two or three islands that complement one another rather than trying to fit in as many as possible.You'll spend less time in transit and more time enjoying the beaches, local restaurants, charming villages, and relaxed pace that make Greece so memorable.

The shoulder seasons of spring and fall are often my favourite times to visit Greece. The weather is generally pleasant, the crowds are smaller, and sightseeing is much more comfortable than during the height of summer.While Greece can certainly be visited during the winter months, many smaller islands become much quieter, with seasonal restaurants, shops, and hotels operating reduced hours or closing altogether. If visiting the islands is an important part of your trip, choosing the right time of year can make a significant difference to your overall experience.
